Giacomo Puccini is one of the greatest Italian composers, the author of such renowned operas as Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly, La bohème, Turandot, and others. Among the most frequently performed operas in the world’s theatres is Tosca.
In all his operas, despite the dramatic and tragic plots, Puccini upholds the primacy of love, honour and fidelity in human relationships. A central place in his works is often given to the female character.
The singer Tosca, after whom the opera is named, is a true Italian patriot, a passionate heroic and romantic figure.
Puccini based his opera on a play by the French dramatist Victorien Sardou, imbued with drama and a spirit of freedom. At the centre of the story lies the tragic love between the singer Floria Tosca and the painter Mario Cavaradossi. The action unfolds against the backdrop of the historical events of 1800 – the invasion of Napoleon’s army into Italy and the establishment of the Republic. The lovers become victims of despotism and tyranny; distant from political struggles, they are nevertheless drawn into them against their will.
The premiere of Tosca took place on 14 January 1900 and was met with little success. Yet, over the years, Tosca has won the hearts of audiences and today continues to be performed with great success on the stages of the world’s leading theatres, where tickets sell out rapidly.
What is the secret of Tosca’s enduring popularity? Those who have the opportunity to witness the new stage production at the Astana Opera will surely find the answer.
Tickets purchased at the Astana Opera are exchangeable and refundable only in cases of cancelled or postponed performances. In all other cases, no refunds and exchanges are possible.
