The production is based on E. T. A. Hoffmann’s beloved German fairy tale, retold by Alexandre Dumas, about a wooden doll and the Mouse King. Over the years, The Nutcracker has earned worldwide fame and become a cherished symbol of the festive New Year season. Although there are many interpretations of The Nutcracker, Vasiliy Vainonen’s version remains one of the most acclaimed and frequently performed on leading stages across the world-especially in its home, the Mariinsky Theatre. The ballet was first staged in St. Petersburg, with legendary dancers Galina Ulanova and Konstantin Sergeyev performing the principal roles. Critics highlight the enchanting, fairy-tale atmosphere of this version, with its elegant set design, romantic characters, dazzling costumes, and brilliant choreography. It is no wonder that this masterpiece is often described as a ballet-féerie - a true «fairy-tale ballet.»
