The end of summer

«Life is very long» Thomas Eliot. And yet it ends. Like summer.

Director Anna Troyanova's production «The End of Summer», based on the play «August: Osage County» by contemporary American playwright and screenwriter Tracy Letts, is devoted to the search for light in a house from which, it would seem, the light has long gone.

The father of the Weston family mysteriously disappears. Without him remain the Indian maid he hired before his disappearance and his seriously ill wife. Because of the sad news, the entire extended family gathers under one roof. Under the pressure of circumstances, in an atmosphere of unbearable summer heat, in a house where the heavy black curtains, which are constantly drawn down, make it impossible to understand when night turns to day, the family members begin to take each other to pieces: they recall offences, open old wounds, accuse each other of childhood traumas, reveal secrets, and show their true selves. Over time, everyone realises that no one is without sin. And everyone sees only one way out, the same way that old Beverly chose, to leave, to get away from this stuffy house, as soon as possible and as far away as possible, and preferably forever.

And they leave. Having shown the tragedy of their lives, each character gives way to the next. In the end, the only people left in the house again are Violetta and Joanna, whose role becomes clear only now it is the housekeeper, the good Indian spirit of this place, whose roots go much deeper than the roots of this family, than the foundations of this house. They go into a vast space where the end and the beginning are the same point: the end of summer does not mean death, it means that next year summer will begin again, because love never ends!
