Worship Your Threshold
The play delves deeply into the complex relationships between parents and children. Its main character, Zhoken, visits his son in the city after many years apart, hoping to see how he is and to meet his grandson. Dreaming of being greeted by a kind daughter-in-law, he instead finds her curt and indifferent. Expecting a bright and spirited grandson, he meets a boy suffocated by the lifeless rhythm of the concrete city. For the first time, he also encounters his son’s father-in-law under this roof.
Zhoken never manages to see his son, Tolaspai. Urged to leave by his daughter-in-law’s polite excuses, he understands their hidden meaning and quietly returns to his native village. The ambitious son, blinded by career pursuits, has forgotten his home, the sacred family threshold and has not once written or checked on his parents. His absence at his mother’s funeral becomes the final wound. A man who has lost his roots, ruled by his wife’s words, is Tolaspai not a reflection of those many sons today who have forgotten where they come from?
