Zhamila

«Zhamila» is a story about the difficult love of a young woman who goes against the established traditions, towards her destiny. Love becomes the main test in her destiny. All the characters are real people from the people, closely connected with the land, honouring the precepts of their ancestors. The play «Zhamila» based on the story by Chingiz Aitmatov is the winner of Kazakhstan's cultural and entertainment award Ticketon Award 2019 in the category «Premiere of the Year». «My father loved Almaty very much. So when I learnt that the play «Zhamila» was going to be staged here, I was very happy. This is my father's early novella, the most famous one. When it was published for the first time, society reacted very negatively, there was a lot of criticism. They wanted to ban «Zhamila» altogether and persecute Aitmatov. A little later «Zhamila» was published in Moscow, and people saw it in a new way. A completely different attitude began», says the writer's son Eldar Aitmatov.
