The Steed is a poetic stage work inspired by the creative journey of Tabyldy Dosymov, Kazakhstan’s first bard poet. Drawing on memories of his youth, the play portrays a life interwoven with melody, a life brief yet filled with music and meaning. This is not a biographical reconstruction, but rather an artistic reflection, a glimpse into the world of imagination and sound, where the echo of his voice becomes a story of its own. Tabyldy was a rare artist who wrote his own verses, composed music for them, and performed with a guitar, embodying the bardic spirit once carried by the sal-seri, the wandering poet-musicians of the Kazakh steppe. Since their time, few have held so many strings of art in their hands.
