Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni is based on the legend of the audacious and daring tempter who easily conquered women’s hearts. Many great writers and composers addressed this story. Only the colouring of the protagonist varied; at times he was described as a criminal and rude villain who received the deserved punishment in the finale. But sometimes authors highlighted completely different traits of Don Giovanni – his dexterity, wit, attractiveness and fearlessness.
The composer himself described the work as a hilarious drama in which the tragic and the comic, the mundane and the sublime are intertwined with particular elegance. The opera is full of expressive vocal numbers and traditional clothes changing scenes, and even contains a scene of fateful retribution. Don Giovanni appears before us as a courageous, charming and unusually energetic hero. There was no comic opera with such extraordinary intensity before Mozart.
