P. Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin is a masterpiece of the world operatic repertoire. Created on the basis of A. Pushkin’s novel in verse of the same name, the opera holds particular significance for Kazakh culture as well: the translation by the great Abai introduced Eugene Onegin to the people of the steppe, making it an integral part of Kazakhstan’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

Today, this production is presented on the stage of the Astana Opera House in an original directorial interpretation. The audience sees the heroine in three guises: Tatyana in her youth, Tatyana in old age, and Tatyana’s Soul, embodied by a ballet dancer. This multi-layered concept was proposed by the renowned Italian director and set designer Davide Livermore. The musical edition is by Maestro Alan Buribayev.

Today, Eugene Onegin forms part of the repertoire of virtually all major opera houses and leading singers worldwide. The principal roles have been brilliantly performed by such opera stars as Renata Tebaldi, Galina Vishnevskaya, Roza Jamanova and Anna Netrebko (Tatyana); Pavel Lisitsian, Muslim Magomayev, Yermek Serkebayev and Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Onegin); Vladimir Atlantov, Ivan Kozlovsky, Sergei Lemeshev, Zurab Sotkilava, Alibek Dnishev (Lensky), among others.
