Almost 60 years ago, in 1958, the opening of the Shakhtar Stadium in Karaganda took place. The first match that took place on its pitch was between FC Shakhtar and the team of Chang Chun from China. Since then, the football history of this stadium began.

Shakhtar is not just a stadium, it is a whole sports complex.

Occupying an area of 14 hectares, it includes a central arena consisting of running tracks, main and reserve football pitches, athletics sector and stands with a capacity of almost 20,000 seats. The complex also has volleyball and tennis courts, table tennis, wrestling, boxing and weightlifting halls. There are also facilities for winter sports: skating and ice hockey halls. It is also equipped with all facilities such as locker rooms for players and referees, doping test rooms and a medical office.

The stadium has undergone a thorough reconstruction several times. The first one took place in the 60s of the last century. Then the number of spectator seats was increased, the field was rebuilt and lighting was installed. The second reconstruction was carried out in 2001 and was more extensive. New office premises were rebuilt and old ones repaired, stands were renovated, a special football pitch and new treadmills were laid. During all the changes made, the area of the sports complex has increased from 2.6 to 14 hectares since its opening until today.

During Soviet times, football and ice hockey championships were held on its territory, and athletes of high level who brought gold medals to their country and city came out of its walls.

Interesting facts about the Karaganda stadium are that it is the most visited stadium in Kazakhstan and has been holding this position for several decades. Back in 1965, with a capacity of 28,000 stands, 35,000 tickets were sold for the match Shakhtar vs Torpedo, and in 2011 it was visited by 18900 football fans.

This sports complex was one of the first to receive a UEFA license, confirming its compliance with all the declared standards and giving the right to host world-class matches.

In addition to famous footballers and sports stars, Shakhtar is also visited by politicians. Thus, in 2006, the reconstructed stadium was assessed by the Head of State Nursultan Nazarbayev.

And today, sports competitions and football matches of national and international importance are regularly held at the complex.
