Appak – Kipchaks’ Daughter is a national opera created by contemporary Kazakhstani composers and staged at the Astana Opera House.
The libretto is based on the love story of Nizami Ganjavi (c. 1141 – c. 1203), a classic of Persian poetry and one of the greatest poets of the medieval East, and a young Kipchak beauty named Appak. “Noble in appearance, beautiful and wise”, she was gifted to the poet by the ruler of Derbent. Nizami freed her from captivity and married her, and Appak became his great love and muse – the very inspiration behind the poet’s captivating female characters.
In the opera, the protagonists must overcome hatred, envy, betrayal, slander and deceit, which heightens the dramatic tension. It is Appak’s wisdom and her love for her homeland – the Kipchak steppe – that bring peace between two warring peoples. She played a pivotal role not only in Nizami Ganjavi’s life and creative work, but also in the history of her own nation.
