«Onegin» - A Stage Production
A production of the SAMi Theatre, presented at the Concordia Theatre.
A brilliant text, a captivating storyline and the depth and ambiguity of its characters - such is Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin.
We have sought to treat Pushkin’s words with the utmost care, preserving the narrative and the original story while enriching it with the famous commentaries on the novel - sharp, paradoxical and distinctly modern. The script also features some of A. S. Pushkin’s mischievous and witty epigrams.
All of this is delicately and flawlessly brought to life by four performers: Onegin, Lensky, Tatyana and the Author. Pushkin - or, in this version, the Author - seems to unfold into his three favourite characters and entrusts them with the action. At times the characters re-interpret the storyline, and at others they interrupt it in order to comment as it unfolds.
Thus, the familiar truths of Pushkin’s classic - drilled into us since school - stop being set in stone. The text begins to live a new life. And the actors enter into an easy, vivid and relevant game with the «canonical» and «untouchable» material.
The music in this production is a completely separate and special character. It is not merely a background or an atmosphere - it is the story itself, its driving force, its energy.
