This poignant drama explores the fate and soul of humanity through the tragic legacy of nuclear testing in the village of Karauyl. The heart-wrenching truth is unveiled through Layla, a disabled girl, and her surrounding social world - victims of an era marked by destruction.
Layla was the moral compass of Karauyl, a radiant embodiment of pure spirit. Yet it was not only the atom that destroyed her - it was people, too. In the finale, we witness the execution of Layla - of Beauty itself. Humanity has slain Beauty, severing its own roots. Layla died, Karauyl died. Karauyl died, and so did a part of the Kazakh people... Is there a future? This painful question echoes in the minds of the villagers, while the final scene - underscored by Carl Orff’s requiem-like choral composition - offers a flicker of hope in the midst of despair.
