The Gypsy Baron is an operetta by Johann Strauss that premiered at the Theater an der Wien on 24 October 1885. It remains one of Strauss’s most beloved works, second in popularity only to Die Fledermaus. Thanks to the richness and expressiveness of Strauss’s music, this stage production can be viewed as either a comic or a lyrical opera, a duality reflected in the serious plot and the unhurried pace of the narrative, which is interspersed with colourful scenes of everyday life.
The story is set in 18th-century Hungary and presents a vivid tale of the marriage between a landowner and a Gypsy girl, who is later revealed to be the daughter of a Turkish Pasha. The characters of The Gypsy Baron are not frivolous figures—they are proud and free-spirited individuals: Sándor Barinkay and Saffi. Returning to his homeland after years of wandering, Baron Sándor Barinkay falls in love with the beautiful Gypsy girl Saffi. But Saffi turns out not to be a Gypsy after all—she is his cousin and the wealthy heiress of a noble count’s lineage.
Human dignity and true love triumph over arrogance and foolishness. The rhythms of the waltz, polka and csárdás—along with Hungarian and Gypsy melodies—sound romantic and enchanting, inspiring optimism and faith in eternal spring and the constancy of love.
