This lively musical reminds us that it’s not only girls who end up in jazz—and if that’s the case, then music sets the rhythm for everything happening both on stage and in life. It charms, throws people into wild situations, travels between characters, imposes its will, and pulls everyone into comic moments full of tears and delight.
The story is set in Chicago, 1929. Two jazz musicians—saxophonist Joe and double bassist Jerry—become unwilling witnesses to a Chicago mafia gang led by Colombo, nicknamed “White Spats.” To escape being killed, the duo tries to join a touring jazz orchestra, only to discover it’s an all-female band. Their only option is to disguise themselves as women, adopting the personas of Josephine and Daphne.
While touring in a Florida resort town with the orchestra, they meet the band’s soloist, known as Sugar. Joe falls for her and, switching between his disguise as “Josephine” and a made-up persona of a young millionaire named Junior, tries to win her heart. Meanwhile, an elderly millionaire named Osgood Fielding falls in love with “Daphne”—that is, Jerry in disguise—believing him to be a woman.
As their romantic escapades unfold, the two don’t realize they’re getting dangerously close to Colombo and his gang, who happen to be settling their own business right there at the same resort. Joe and Jerry narrowly escape death at the hands of the gangsters.
In the end, both men reveal their true identities to their beloveds. Graceful mischief, light flirtation, spicy situations, dynamic dances, and almost gangster-style showdowns—all this awaits in the musical Some Like It Hot.
