«Ah, Offenbach!» - An Evening of One-Act Operettas
This evening of musical theatre features two delightful one-act operettas by Jacques Offenbach. Part I - «Tromb-Al-Cazar», Part II - «Fortunio’s Song».
«Tromb-Al-Cazar» (also known as «The Brigand Actors») is a sparkling musical comedy written in 1856. It’s a comic farce - a «play within a play» - full of theatrical mishaps and humorous twists in the lives of eccentric stage performers. Offenbach’s wit shines through this charming piece, rich with playful melodies and satirical flair.
«Fortunio’s Song» is a short operetta composed in 1861, following the success of Offenbach’s celebrated parody «Orpheus in the Underworld.» Although written later, it draws upon one of the composer’s earliest songs, inspired by the traditions of 18th–early 19th century comic opera. Its music is fresh and spontaneous, with a captivating melodic charm that lingers in the heart.
