The Bayadere (KATMK)
Odette - the beautiful bayadere - falls deeply in love with the Indian prince Rajami, who is willing to defy an ancient law that forbids the princes of Lagore from marrying foreigners. But Rajami ultimately renounces the throne. In a bold act of self-sacrifice, Odette stages a performance during their engagement announcement, turning everything into a farce. Heartbroken, Rajami prepares to leave, and Odette vanishes from the stage. Their hearts are shattered… Yet suddenly, permission for their marriage arrives. Joy returns. The enchanting melodies of Imre Kálmán immerse the audience in a dreamlike vision of the East, where fantasy and reality merge - the heady fragrance of orchids intertwines with sharp judgement, the magic of love collides with the mundanity of daily life, and dazzling transformations bring unexpected twists. The finale, like all good operettas, is vivid and radiant. The essence of the entire performance is captured in the timeless aphorism: «What a woman wants, God wills».
Production Highlights
The Bayadere, with a libretto by Elena Yezerskaya, is a captivating and visually stunning operetta. The staging team, specially invited from Russia in 2003 as part of the international «Russia-Kazakhstan» project, presented the story in a vivid and imaginative way, even within the classical framework of operetta. The set design by Tatyana Spasolomskaya is marked by originality and airiness, reflecting the essence of the East with precision and splendour. The costumes are equally unique, amplifying the exotic atmosphere of the production. Choreographic sequences are seamlessly woven into the narrative, with distinct suites that enhance the mystical Eastern flair. This operetta leaves a truly delightful impression and is consistently met with enthusiasm by even the most discerning audiences.
The production features the theatre’s leading vocalists, chorus, and ballet artists.
