Beybarys

Set in an era of relentless warfare, the play centres on the dramatic life of the legendary Az-Zahir Beybarys - a boy captured in childhood on the Kipchak steppe and sold into slavery, who rose through his exceptional talent to become one of Egypt’s most illustrious commanders and a wise and powerful ruler. Famed across the world and endowed with wealth and absolute authority, Beybarys nevertheless carried within him one unfulfilled desire - something he could never obtain. It was the scent of a single tuft of wormwood. Haunted by the memory of the steppe and the fragrance of wormwood from his childhood, he spent his life longing for his homeland - a yearning that never ceased.
