«Khanuma, or Anything Goes»
Khanuma» is a play written in 1882 by the Georgian playwright Avksenty Tsagareli.
The action takes place in the 19th century, during Georgia’s time as part of the Russian Empire. The nobility is undergoing economic decline: princes lose their former influence and power. In these hard times, everything is sold for money, love and honour alike become commodities. A person is like a bird in a cage, longing for freedom. Yet not all is lost. Khanuma knows how to find a way out of even the most difficult circumstances and that way is a wedding. For when there are two in the cage, it is no longer a cage, but a nest.
