As part of its touring performances in Astana and Almaty, Touring K-Arts presents a concert of Korean traditional art “Music, Dance, and Songs of Korea”. The programme features winners of the national competition “Onnara” in traditional music and dance, organised by the National Gugak Center.

The concert programme includes folk songs, chamber music, as well as contemporary compositions. The Kazakhstani audience will have a chance to experience the true richness of Korean traditional art and its unique emotional atmosphere, especially in works such as the Arirang Suite.

The performance of 11 outstanding masters will offer audiences a rare opportunity to witness Korean traditional art, which lies at the foundation of the global phenomenon known as the Korean Wave – Hallyu.

PROGRAMME:

Jeongak Ensemble: pieces Yeombuldodeuri and Taryeong from the suite Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang – a work for wind orchestra performed during ceremonial occasions.

Piri Jeongak: piece Sangnyeongsanpuri, which embodies the beauty of silence and inner space characteristic of the jeongak traditional court music.

Gagok Gyemyeonjo Eonrong. Gagok is one of the most significant genres of classical vocal music – the performance of sijo poetry with instrumental accompaniment, expressing the philosophy of nature and humanity.

Geomungo Sanjo: Hangapdeuk Style. The Hangapdeuk style is distinguished by its expressive tone, precise ornamentation (sigimsae), and rich, resonant timbre, creating a sense of philosophical concentration and inner tension.

Pansori Sugunggaexcerpt Yakseongga (Song of Medicinal Properties). A traditional Korean musical narrative performed by a singer and a drummer, presenting a rapid enumeration of numerous medicinal herbs and remedies. This piece vividly reveals the performer’s verbal virtuosity, vocal mastery, and dramatic artistry.

Ajaeng Sanjo: Park Jongseon Style. Ajaeng Sanjo is a solo instrumental work for the ajaeng, a large bowed zither with a deep, resonant tone. Its melody intertwines sorrow with noble austerity, evoking an image of refined and restrained beauty.

Folk Music Ensemble: Sinawi. An improvisational instrumental ensemble inheriting shamanic musical traditions.

Folk Song Arirang. Arirang is the most famous Korean folk song, known in numerous regional variations. The distinctive rhythms and performance styles of each region create a vivid palette of folk colours. Today, Arirang stands as a symbol of Korea.

Dance Janghanga. A contemporary interpretation of classical Korean dance created by the distinguished choreographer Guk Su-ho, renowned for his mastery in blending tradition with innovation.
