Matyo folk art is a legacy of Hungarian culture
The Almaty Museum hosts the exhibition «Matyó Folk Art – A Heritage of Hungarian Culture».
The exhibition is organised by the Almaty Museum Union in cooperation with the Consulate General of Hungary in Almaty, with the support of the Akimat of Almaty.
For the first time in Kazakhstan, the unique embroidery tradition of Matyó folk art — inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage — is being presented at the Almaty Museum. The exhibition features vivid examples of embroidered textiles, traditional garments, household items, and archival photographs offering insights into the daily life and customs of the Hungarian people. The exhibits have been provided by the Matyó Museum in Mezőkövesd (Hungary) and private collectors.
The display includes over 100 unique artefacts that reflect the distinctive aesthetics of Matyó embroidery, celebrating Hungary’s rich cultural legacy and highlighting the enduring cultural ties between the Hungarian and Kazakh peoples.
This exhibition is part of an international museum partnership. It follows a previous showcase from the collection of the Museum of the History of Almaty, which was held from 3 October to 20 November 2024 at the «Karcag Kincse» Museum of Arts in Karcag (Hungary), drawing significant interest from Hungarian audiences.
The exhibition will run until 16 July 2025.
