Pannochka
An innocent, ordinary man Khoma Brut is delivered into the hands of the devil. Neither angels rise to protect him, nor do kind Christians come to his aid. And that is the tragedy. The Cossack captain’s people know that Pannochka serves Satan, that she is part of his realm. They also know the horror that awaits the seminary student during the nights of vigil by the witch’s coffin. And what do they do? Do they go out into the night and kneel before the church to save the poor bursa student with the power of common prayer? No. They remain loyal to the captain, not to God.
Khoma is doomed: the many-faced hell and one utterly lonely man are not equal opponents.
