Once upon a time, a little yet very cunning matchmaker from Avlabari, the hill district of Tiflis, stirred up such affairs that one could hardly catch one’s breath from her tricks and wisdom! That matchmaker was none other than Khanuma. She was swift and shrewd: quarrelling with one, singing songs to another, telling tales to a third. Yet all the while, she thought of her own benefit and gained authority. Such a matchmaker is more precious than a thoroughbred horse, more dazzling than a brand-new car, and sweeter than aged wine! Everyone was left delighted with Khanuma, for there is nothing in the world better than a clever Caucasian woman! That is how weddings were celebrated in Tiflis!
