Tartuffe

«When a person’s heart is full of kindness but their mind remains in darkness, they ultimately bring great misfortune upon themselves and end up unhappy», wrote Leo Tolstoy.

Yet such misfortune never affects only one life - it inevitably draws their loved ones into its shadow as well. Excessive piety, blind religious zeal, radical fanaticism - all of these stem from the same root: a darkened mind. A darkened mind is endlessly gullible; it can be manipulated with ease, persuaded by the slightest falsehood. It struggles to distinguish truth from deception, and therefore becomes a convenient tool in the hands of those who wish to control it. Sooner or later, this clouded mind destroys not only its owner but also those close to them - even their own kind and gentle heart. For turning such a person into a cruel, merciless instrument requires very little.

Fairy tales and legends, and especially anything uttered by an «authority” figure - whether in a skullcap, a monk’s robe, or speaking solemnly from a television screen - are readily believed by a mind steeped in darkness.
