The Gypsy Baron (KATMK)
The action takes place in 18th-century Hungary. This vibrant tale tells the story of a landowner’s romance and marriage with a gypsy girl, who is later revealed to be the daughter of a Turkish pasha. The characters of The Gypsy Baron are not frivolous - they are proud and free-spirited souls, like Barinkay and Saffi.
Baron Sandor Barinkay returns home from his travels and falls in love with the beautiful gypsy girl Saffi. But it turns out that Saffi is no mere gypsy - she is actually his cousin and the wealthy heiress of a noble count’s family. In the end, human dignity and true love triumph over foolishness and arrogance.
Waltzes, polkas, the spirited csárdás, and, of course, gypsy and Hungarian melodies infuse the operetta with romance, enchantment, and an unwavering optimism in the eternal spring and enduring power of love.
This operetta was staged during the golden era of the theatre, when productions were created that stood out as extraordinary works of art, even by Soviet standards. Johann Strauss’s The Gypsy Baron continues to enjoy enduring success at the Karaganda Theatre of Musical Comedy. It remains timeless because it was produced in the best traditions of classical operetta and because the new generation of artists honours and preserves the integrity of the original staging.
Challenging vocal parts, elegant scenography, and period-authentic costumes all contribute to the atmosphere of the production, creating an immersive and aesthetically rich experience. Throughout the performance, audiences are captivated by a dazzling stream of characters, dramatic twists, dance numbers, and high-level vocal mastery.
The operetta features the theatre’s leading vocalists, as well as the chorus and ballet ensemble.
