Count Albrecht is in love with the peasant girl Giselle. To conceal his true identity, he disguises himself in simple village clothes. The gamekeeper Hans tries to warn Giselle that Albrecht is deceiving her. Soon, a group of hunters arrives - among them Albrecht’s fiancée and his father. After the hunters depart, Hans openly accuses Albrecht of deceit and presents the Count’s sword as proof. Giselle refuses to believe him. Hans sounds his hunting horn, and before the stunned Albrecht appears his noble bride. Struck by the unbearable truth, Giselle loses her sanity and dies.

Midnight. Hans comes to Giselle’s grave. Myrtha, the Queen of the Wilis, summons Giselle’s spirit from the earth to welcome her into the ghostly circle of the Wilis. The Wilis are the souls of young women who died before their wedding day.
«Dressed in bridal gowns, crowned with flowers… irresistibly beautiful, the Wilis dance by moonlight - dancing ever more passionately and faster as they sense their hour is fading and they must return to their icy graves». (H. Heine)

The Wilis force Hans to dance until, dizzy and exhausted, he is cast into the lake.

Later, Count Albrecht comes to Giselle’s grave. Myrtha orders him to dance as well. Giselle pleads with Myrtha to spare him, but the Wilis show no mercy.
At dawn, as the sun rises, the Wilis lose their power. Albrecht is saved. Giselle bids farewell to her beloved.

Yet she will forever remain in Albrecht’s memory - an eternal remorse for a lost love, a love stronger than death itself.
