«Tartuffe» in Almaty

Tartuffe - hypocrisy incarnate - Molière’s brilliant comedy.

An immortal play about deceit, hypocrisy, and the art of masking one’s desires with a façade of piety.

One of Molière’s sharpest works, Tartuffe tells the story of how a sanctimonious fraudster enters the household of the respectable Orgon and nearly destroys the family in his pursuit of power and personal gain. The production by the «Ilya Bobkov Workshop» transforms this classical masterpiece into a biting satire of contemporary society, where masks and lies exist side by side with us.

Written in the 17th century, Molière’s comedy remains strikingly modern: Tartuffe is a consummate manipulator, capable of deceiving even the most prudent minds. Balancing between farce and drama, the play ridicules human gullibility and demonstrates the eternal power of art to unmask. The staging is vivid, ironic, and slightly grotesque, underscoring the satirical edge of the text.

About the Theatre: Founded in Almaty in 2025 by director and educator Ilya Bobkov, the «Ilya Bobkov Workshop» began as a creative laboratory and swiftly grew into a professional company formed by graduates of the acting programme at Turan Film Academy. Today, it is an independent repertory theatre presenting both classics and contemporary drama in fresh interpretations. The theatre’s philosophy rests on the actors’ high professionalism, psychological depth of character, and the pursuit of an honest dialogue with the audience. Its mission is to foster Kazakhstan’s theatrical community, preserving the traditions of the classical school while opening new forms of stage art.

About the Director: Ilya Bobkov is a graduate of the T. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts, trained in the studio of Ruben Andriasyan. He enhanced his skills in Moscow and St. Petersburg and works as an actor and director at the Mikhail Lermontov National Russian Drama Theatre. As founder of the independent «Ilya Bobkov Workshop», he combines respect for the classical school with a distinctive directorial signature, bringing productions to life that are vivid, contemporary, and emotionally charged.
