Atjalman ğasyr
As the Kazakh people transitioned into a new cultural form, so too did the world of theatre, journeying through the tumultuous roads of fate amid sweeping societal changes and conflicts.
Atzhalman Gasyr (The Century of the Rat) is a historical drama that centres on the final years in the life of Zhumat Shanin - a founding figure of Kazakh theatre. At its heart lies the dark tragedy of the early 20th century, when a wave of repression swept through the Kazakh intelligentsia. Through the fate of Shanin, the play offers a powerful artistic portrayal of the political games orchestrated by the Soviet regime - a system that united nations into a single Union, while silencing the voices of its brightest minds. Dedicated to the 130th anniversary of Zhumat Shanin - the first director and actor who devoted his strength, intellect, and spirit to the founding of Kazakh theatre - this play serves as both tribute and testimony to his enduring legacy and the trials of an era steeped in sorrow.
