The House of Bernarda Alba

Federico García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba has long captivated audiences across Spain under the vision of many directors.

(In the history of Kazakh theatre, it was first staged in 1974 at the Mukhtar Auezov Kazakh National Drama Theatre.)

Now, nearly half a century later, the timeless masterpiece returns to the grand stage of the Kazakh theatre through a bold new interpretation by director D. Zhumabay at the G. Musrepov Theatre.

At the heart of the play lies a powerful rebellion against Bernarda’s oppressive moral tyranny over her daughters. The youngest, Adela, emerges as the «rebel» - embodying the clash between desire and dominance, and becoming the voice of Lorca’s deeper message.

Inspired by true events and rich with social critique, this production revisits traditions and customs through a fresh, critical lens - revealing the suffocating power of honour and social conformity.

Following the death of her husband, Bernarda Alba imposes strict mourning upon her five daughters - Angustias, Magdalena, Amelia, Martirio, and Adela - turning her home into a prison.

In a cruel world where emotion is silenced by authority, tyranny crushes the delicate, the yearning, the innocent. And in the cold shadow of control, even laughter turns bitter, and the tragic withering of the soul becomes inevitable.

Come witness a stirring portrayal of one woman’s struggle for freedom - and a household haunted by silence, fear, and lost hope.
