In Chekhov's world there are no obvious contrasts («a fellow - a stranger», «good - bad»), but there is a palette of shades, allowing, if not to justify, then at least justify the motives and actions of the characters. Our souls are the same as seagulls: they soar into the sky on the high energies of love, or crash to the ground from a random shot of an indifferent passerby....
