SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN - A Lecture-Performance about Martha Graham

Martha Graham began dancing surprisingly late - at the age of 17. In her autobiography, she writes: «It must have been 1911. I was 17. I saw a poster with a woman in an oriental costume, her long blonde hair cascading down. I begged to go to Los Angeles, and after a while, my father agreed. I went to the Mason Opera House in a dark blue dress and hat that my father bought me. That evening, my fate was sealed.»

During Graham’s student years, dance was mostly seen as entertainment - a part of vaudeville and social balls. Only European ballet held the status of art. In American dance schools, girls were trained for shows and treated accordingly. But Martha wanted something else entirely…

Her bold, thorny, and magnificent journey unfolds in the lecture-performance «Something Will Happen» - an artistic exploration of her life and influence.

At the time, it was believed women were emotional and men cerebral. Women were expected to move smoothly, men with sharp, linear motions. But Martha sought to portray the HUMAN on stage - someone focused, powerful.
«The fiercest and most gifted feminist, Martha Graham liberated both women and dance!» - The New York Times.
