The Cripple of the Island of Inishmaan

«The Cripple of the Island of Inishmaan» is a play about the search for and finding paradise in the circumstances of hell. The characters exist on a remote, God-forsaken island, where hatred of one's neighbour is a peculiar form of love, where any dreams are hopeless, and happiness is found in the misfortune of others.

The protagonist Billy is a cripple, but his illness is related to his body, while all the other inhabitants of the island have sick and disfigured souls. Billy tries to leave hell and find paradise, somewhere far away, somewhere «where we are away». But after leaving the island, he does not find paradise. Billy seeks and finds paradise within himself. «For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened».
