One-act ballet performance «Carmen Suite» at the Jas Sahn Theatre

An Enchanting Ballet Evening by the State Academic Dance Theatre of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The State Academic Dance Theatre of the Republic of Kazakhstan presents a breathtaking ballet evening featuring the timeless masterpiece «Carmen Suite» set to the music of Georges Bizet and Rodion Shchedrin, in a powerful stage version by the ballet legend Bulat Ayukhanov. The evening also includes a concert programme with highlights from the most striking productions in the theatre’s history.

A bustling city square. The changing of the guard. The officer assigns a young soldier, José, to his post. His handsome appearance captures the attention of Carmen, a free-spirited gypsy. She attempts to charm him, and though he is clearly drawn to her, José remains faithful to his duty.

Suddenly, a fight erupts among the women of the tobacco factory. Carmen is named the instigator, and the officer orders José to escort her to prison. On the way, the enamoured José releases her, committing a crime against the law. In order to stay with her, José deserts the army.

A dashing torreador, beloved by the crowd, appears. His passionate tales of triumph mesmerise Carmen. Captivated by new feelings, she ignores José’s jealousy. The sudden arrival of the officer changes everything - he demands José return to his barracks. Enraged, José pulls a knife and drives him away. Carmen, impressed by José’s act of defiance, falls for him once again.

As she reads her fortune, the figure of Fate - Roc - appears, foretelling Carmen’s tragic destiny.

At the bullfighting arena, the toreador displays his brilliant skills. His opponent, a mystical being embodying both the bull and Fate, stands before him. Carmen watches with admiration. Then José appears, begging Carmen to return his love. But the proud beauty rejects him with finality. Overwhelmed by despair, José stabs Carmen with a dagger.
