The Kokshetau City History Museum is a unique cultural institution housed in a historical building dating back to the late 19th century, itself an architectural monument.
Its exhibitions narrate the foundation and development of Kokshetau - from its establishment in 1824 to the present day.
Visitors can explore authentic household items, documents, photographs, and rare artefacts that reflect the lives of the city’s residents across different eras. Special attention is given to the Soviet period as well as to the cultural and ethnographic characteristics of the region. The museum's interior is designed in the style of an old city house, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past.
Opened in 2000, the museum now holds a collection of over 16,000 items that span all periods of the region’s history.
The museum actively engages with youth and tourists, organising guided tours, themed events, and educational programmes. This is a place where history comes alive - accessible, engaging, and respectful of cultural heritage.
The museum is divided into thematic halls, each representing a distinct historical era:
1. City Foundation and the 19th Century - features maps of early settlements, documents, and materials about the first inhabitants.
2. Era of Abylai Khan and Kenesary - showcases weapons, traditional clothing, a fragment of Abylai Khan’s robe, and replicas of axes and shields.
3. Soviet Era and Virgin Lands Campaign - includes photos, documents, workers’ daily life, the development of healthcare, education, and industry.
4. «Old Apartment» of the 1950s–60s - a uniquely recreated interior complete with furniture, textiles, and household items of the era.
5. Cultural and International Life of Kokshetau - covers partnerships with foreign cities, musical traditions, and rare archival materials.
