The story unfolds in Kazakhstan between 1937 and 1945, in the KarLag labour camp, which held prisoners from across the world.

It is here that two irreconcilable enemies meet on foreign soil: Telmo Reyes (30), a Spanish Republican, and Salgado (28), a soldier of the Spanish Blue Division that fought against the USSR.

Struggling to adapt to camp life, they encounter Oraz Sakenov (45), a Kazakh philologist and teacher - a collective image inspired by the patriots of Kazakhstan’s past. Educated and wise, Oraz offers guidance to the prisoners and seeks ways to ease their suffering.

Within the camp, Salgado meets Aisulu (26), a young Kazakh woman. A romance blossoms between them, but Aisulu faces a painful choice between patriotic duty and her feelings.

The film portrays the generosity, tolerance, and compassion of the Kazakh people, who welcomed strangers and gave millions a second homeland.
