The noble but bankrupt Prince Vano Pantiashvili wants to improve his financial situation by marrying a rich bride. This is known to the best matchmakers in Tiflis, Khanuma and Kabato. Kabato is the first to appear in the house of Pantiashvili.

She has found for the Prince a young beautiful girl Sona, the daughter of a successful merchant Mikich, who dreams to be related to the aristocracy. But Sona and her teacher Kote, the Prince's poor nephew, are in love with each other. Khanuma, the most skilful matchmaker in Tiflis, takes on the task of helping the lovers and upsetting the plans of Kabato, who has overtaken her. Thanks to her intricacies, Sona and Kote find happiness, Akop marries Hanuma, the Prince marries Guliko, and Kabato becomes the main matchmaker in Tiflis.

The musical comedy ‘The Pranks of Khanuma’ has been in the theatre's repertoire for many years already. It is imbued with good humour and folk intonations of Georgia, a blessed and cheerful land where beauties are the thinnest, jigits are the slimmest and songs are the longest.

In our production, the prince is the most Georgian of all «Georgian princes», and the lovers Kote and Sona are the most romantic and lyrical of all Romeo and Juliet, and the knave Khanuma will give a head start to the great combinator Ostap Bender. And even the antagonistic Kabato, contrary to logic, one wants to sympathise with her: this play is so cheerful and optimistic.

The comedy features the theatre's leading vocalists, chorus and ballet dancers.
