Karagoz, a beautiful young woman, and Syrym, a passionate poet, are madly in love. Yet their love is fiercely opposed by Morzhan - Karagoz’s grandmother - a formidable matriarch and stern ruler of her clan. Strong-willed and unyielding as black oak, Morzhan refuses to accept their bond and instead arranges Karagoz’s marriage to Narsha, a wealthy nobleman. Though Narsha, too, harbours deep affection for Karagoz in his own way, the forced union tears her away from her true love. Unable to bear the agony of separation, Karagoz’s fragile soul shatters under the weight of grief, driving her to madness - and ultimately, to death.

This tragic tale lays bare the harshness of the era’s rigid traditions and unforgiving societal codes, which not only destroy the tender love between Syrym and Karagoz but also leave Narsha in quiet despair. Devastated yet inspired, Syrym vows to carry on - to immortalise their love through poetry and live the rest of his days singing verses of undying devotion.
