THE TOWER OF BABEL
«The Tower of Babel» is a professional inclusive performance by the Action Literally Theatre Lab team from 2019. Inclusive means that artists with developmental disabilities work on stage alongside professional artists.
«The Tower of Babel» is inspired by the painting of the same name by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It is a story about the search for a common language, familiar to everyone in the modern world, telling about the difficulties we face every day when we cannot understand each other. But we can always support each other.
Boris Pavlovich, director of the play «The Tower of Babel», said:
«We are preoccupied with the question: what does it mean to really meet, to understand each other? That's why we took the myth of the Tower of Babel as a starting point for the first performance. What is the ‘mixing of tongues’? Is it a punishment - or a gift? When people woke up one morning, they spoke a different language. They could no longer understand each other, but they each found their own personal, unique language with which to express what could not be said in any other way».
In the inclusive laboratory «Action Literally» professional actors from Almaty theatres and non-professional artists with mental disabilities, Down syndrome and autism work together to create plays, performances and other creative projects.
There are 20 actors, musicians and artists in the troupe of «Action Literally». This is the only professional inclusive theatre in Kazakhstan where people with mental developmental disabilities are officially employed.
