A Bride’s Story
From May 17 to May 31, 2025, the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan is hosting an exhibition of the manga «A Bride’s Story» by the renowned Japanese artist Kaoru Mori.
The exhibition is part of the 15th International Art Festival "Japanese Spring," which is taking place in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Manga—Japanese comics—is a globally recognized art form. In Japan, manga is considered an important part of mass media and one of the country’s cultural symbols.
Kaoru Mori’s A Bride’s Story, featured in the exhibition, was first published in 2008, and by 2022, 14 volumes had been released. The work received an award at the Angoulême International Comics Festival (France, 2012) and the Manga Awards in 2014. The manga was also exhibited at the Kyoto International Manga Museum in honor of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the five Central Asian countries.
The story takes place in the late 19th century in a village near the Caspian Sea. The main character, a young woman named Amir, comes from a remote aul (village) to marry Karluk, a boy eight years her junior. With delicacy and artistry, the manga portrays their relationship, family and rural life, culture, and traditions. All 14 volumes of the manga will be presented at the exhibition.
