Gogol’s characters are caricatures. Their actions are absurd, their fears - comical, their desires - full of contradiction. And yet, the most striking thing is how familiar they all feel. Is the modern person truly free in their choices? We like to believe we shape our own fate - but are our decisions really untouched by the opinions of others? Society often leads us gently by the hand, even when we’re convinced we’re walking on our own.

We are still governed by others’ expectations. Still afraid to decide when eyes are upon us. Still hiding our true desires behind the question: «What will people say?»

The protagonist, Podkolyosin, paralysed by his fear of change, mirrors the modern state of confusion - when a step forward feels like a step into the void.

«Marriage» is an attempt to peer into the inner workings of choice. The boundaries of the stage begin to blur: the audience becomes part of the space, standing side by side with the characters, almost hearing their thoughts. The performance distances us from everyday life - only to return it to us as farce. This is a production that refuses to let the viewer remain a passive observer.
